The Three-Color Zone System — Green, Yellow, Red

Green Zone (Safe — Optimal Print Area): The ideal print area, fully flat, away from seams, collars, and stitching. Any design placed entirely within the green zone will print with maximum clarity, alignment accuracy, and ink consistency. This is where you want your fine text, detailed logos, and photorealistic faces. The green zone dimensions automatically adjust based on garment size and cut: a standard unisex medium has a different green zone than an oversized XL or a fitted women’s cut.
Yellow Zone (Caution — Approach with Care): Designs crossing into this area may encounter slight distortion near side seams, shoulder stitching, or collar ribbing. Small text, fine detail, and thin hairlines should avoid this zone. The engine flags yellow-zone text with a warning: “Text below 10pt may lose legibility near seam.” You can override the warning, but you’ll do so with full knowledge of the risk.
Red Zone (Blocked — Do Not Print): The collar seam, sleeve attachment, bottom hem, and side seam ridges. These areas are physically blocked from printing to prevent print-head collision, misalignment, and ink deposition on stitching that will crack and peel. Every monitor displays color differently. Your phone’s OLED screen is not your laptop’s LCD, and neither of them is a DTG printer depositing water-based ink on cotton fiber. Our color management system doesn’t just convert your RGB file to CMYK — it simulates how that CMYK ink will actually look on the specific fabric color and weight you’ve selected. This is the difference between “we hope it’s close” and “we know it’s accurate.”

RGB to CMYK+W Conversion — See the Shift Before You Ship

Your uploaded file is almost certainly in RGB color mode — that’s the default for every phone camera, screenshot tool, and design app. But DTG printers use CMYK+W (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, plus White ink for dark garments). The conversion is not one-to-one. Neon RGB greens, electric blues, and hot pinks have no direct CMYK equivalent and will shift to their closest printable match.

Why do my colors look different in the preview than on my screen?
Your monitor displays RGB light; our DTG printers use CMYK+W ink. The preview engine performs a real-time conversion using our custom ICC profile and shows you the exact printable color match. Neon and fluorescent RGB colors (especially greens, pinks, and oranges) will shift to their closest CMYK equivalent. The preview shows this shift so you can adjust before ordering. What is the print area, and what happens if my design goes outside it?
The print area is the maximum space the DTG print head can reach on the garment. Our preview engine uses a three-zone system: Green (safe/optimal), Yellow (caution/seam proximity), and Red (blocked/physically unprintable). The engine prevents designs from entering the red zone. Designs in the yellow zone trigger a warning. Standard print areas are: Front Chest 12″×16″, Oversized Front 14″×18″, Full Back 14″×20″, Sleeve 4″×4″, Pocket 4″×4.5″. Dimensions adjust automatically based on garment size and cut.

Why does my design look different on the black shirt preview than on the white shirt?
Dark garments require a white ink underbase layer beneath your colored design. This underbase makes colors pop but adds slight texture and opacity to the print area. The preview engine toggles this underbase on and off so you can see the difference. Light colors, pastels, and skin tones see the most dramatic improvement with the underbase. Dark colors see less change but gain consistency. The preview shows both modes so you can design accordingly.

How small can text be and still look sharp in the preview and print?
Minimum legible text size depends on fabric texture. On smooth ringspun cotton: 6pt for bold sans-serif, 8pt for regular weight, 10pt for serif. On ribbed fabric (collars, textured blends): add 2pt to all minimums. On moisture-wicking polyester: 8pt minimum for all weights. My logo has a white background in the preview. How do I make it transparent?
Save your logo as a PNG-24 with transparency enabled. JPG files do not support transparency and will always show a white background. In Photoshop, use “Save for Web” and check “Transparency.” In Illustrator, export as PNG with “Background: Transparent.” Test by viewing your file on a colored background — if you see a white box, transparency is not active. Re-upload the corrected PNG and the white box will disappear.

I zoomed in and my design looks pixelated. Will it print like that?
Yes. The 400% zoom view in the preview shows you exactly how the print will look at the thread level. If your design looks pixelated or soft at zoom, it will print pixelated and soft. The fix is to upload a higher-resolution file or reduce the print size in the editor. Vector files (AI, EPS) will never pixelate regardless of zoom level. The preview engine’s Resolution Check flags this issue automatically before you reach checkout.

Can I edit my design after seeing the preview, or do I need to start over?
You can edit positioning, scaling, and rotation unlimited times within the preview engine without re-uploading. If you need to change the actual artwork (fix resolution, adjust colors, add elements), simply upload the revised file — your garment selection, size, and placement preferences are saved to your session. You can preview as many times as you want; we only charge when you click “Approve & Pay.”

What if the printed shirt doesn’t match the preview I approved?
